Mikuyu Assistant Chief Peter Ngovu has managed to trace and take some missing students to school following a recent government directive requiring all Grade 10 learners to report to school with or without fees.
The administrator, who embarked on a door-to-door mop-up operation in Vota villages in Machakos county, successfully tracked at least 10 learners who were unable to report to senior school due to lack of funds.
Ngovu said that with the help of village elders, they traced and identified all Grade 10 students who had been stuck at home and managed to assist 10 of them with a few requirements to report to Vota Secondary School by Tuesday morning.
The sub-chief added that he wanted all learners in his area to have an equal chance in life, which is why he was keen on implementing the government directive on 100 per cent transition, noting that some learners come from extremely humble backgrounds where parents struggle to provide basic needs.
“This initiative is quite necessary as it guarantees equal opportunities for all learners, and together with my village elders, we have ensured all the Grade 10 learners from Vota who were stuck at home are now in school,” Ngovu said.
Martha Mbatha, whose son had been stuck at home, said she had lost hope as her casual work was not enough to fend for her children. She commended the government for intervening and ensuring her son reported to school even without school fees.
Peter Wambua, said that as a farmer who relies on farm produce to feed and educate his children, the prolonged drought had rendered them destitute and unable to do so. He added, “The efforts by the chief and village elders are appreciated since we were not aware the government had declared that students can report without fees.”
Dennis Musyoka, 15, who reported to Vota Secondary School after staying home due to financial challenges, said he was devastated seeing all his friends go to school while he remained at home with no hope for the future. He thanked the chief and village elders for assisting them to return to school.
