They were drawn from Kisumu, Homa Bay and Kakamega counties.

Participants assembled at Green Park Bus Terminus before marching to Afya House. They planned to march to other government houses, including the National Treasury and the office of the Council of Governors in Westlands, to present their petition.

Alias Mutai, one of the health workers, revealed that with their current contracts set to expire in April, the workers fear interruption of services and loss of jobs unless the government guarantees continuity.

"We are here to remind the Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, together with PS Ouma Oluga, that we will neither tire nor give up protesting. We will be back next Tuesday, and the other Tuesdays that precede until we are given our right and our right is to be given a permanent contract,” he said.

The health workers had earlier written to the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, notifying him of the peaceful demonstrations, adding that they are frustrated by the government’s failure to implement agreed frameworks for formally transitioning UHC-contract staff and paying gratuities owed under Gazette Notice No. 8091 of 2020.

“We have been waiting for months, yet there is no clarity on when the promised transition will take place, and our gratuities remain unpaid,” UHC chairperson Desmond Wafula said.

“We are simply asking for what is rightfully ours.”
