Governor Wavinya Ndeti cooking for youth as she commissioned the second - cohort of Machakos Youth Service on January 23, 2026.Youth empowerment is not only about skilling but also instilling discipline among the youth, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has said.
Ndeti said the Machakos Youth Service programme marks the beginning of a transformative journey for youth, focusing not only on technical skills but also on character development, discipline, leadership, and community service.
"The positive outcomes from the first cohort inspired us to expand the programme to include more youth across all wards. This programme culminates in graduation, not as an end, but as a launch into society as skilled, confident, and responsible citizens,” Ndeti said.
The Machakos county boss spoke when she commissioned the second cohort of the programme in the county on Friday.
She encouraged the youth to embrace the training with discipline, commitment, and compassion.
Some 1,640 youth have been enrolled and are already undertaking their trainings at the Machakos ATC Bootcamp.
Ndeti said her administration remains committed to investing in the youth as a key pillar for securing the nation’s future.
She said the MYS’s second cohort was a culmination of the programme’s first cohort’s success in providing young people with skills, training, and opportunities to thrive.
The second cohort comprises youth from all wards, including 245 from Machakos Town, 223 from Mavoko, 218 from Kathiani, 198 from Mwala, 168 from Yatta, 165 from Kangundo, 163 from Matungulu, 116 from Masinga, 76 from Ndithini, and 68 from Kalama.
Ndeti said the programme follows a structured three-phase pathway.
The first phase—the Formation Centre—focuses on building character, discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
The second phase takes the youth to Vocational Training Centres, where they gain hands-on, market-driven skills in areas such as electrical and electronics, culinary arts, motor vehicle mechanics, plumbing, masonry, welding, cosmetology, fashion and design and event management, and DJing.
The final phase, community service, emphasises giving back and creating measurable impact in the community.
She urged the youth in this cohort to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the programme, adding that discipline, respect, and good behaviour are key to making the most of the training and opportunities offered.
