Traffic has been restored on the Nairobi Southern Bypass on the Mombasa Road–bound section following an earlier oil tanker incident, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.
In a traffic restoration notice dated January 24, 2026, KeNHA said the road was reopened after the completion of emergency response and restoration works carried out during the day.
The authority said the incident had temporarily disrupted traffic flow on the busy bypass.
KeNHA said the reopening followed “the restoration of traffic on the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Mombasa Road bound) following an earlier oil tanker incident that occurred during the day.”
The authority confirmed that motorists can now use the road normally.
According to KeNHA, the reopening was made possible after “successful emergency response operations which included fire suppression, site containment, and safety assessments.”
The authority said the works were completed through collaboration with the Traffic Police and other emergency agencies to ensure the road was safe for use.
“KeNHA has now opened the road for traffic following complete restoration works done in collaboration with the Traffic Police and other emergency agencies,” KeNHA actingDG Luka Kimeli said.
The authority noted that motorists have already resumed normal movement along the Southern Bypass.
However, it urged road users to remain cautious as traffic flow stabilises in the area.
“Road users are advised to exercise caution, adhere to posted traffic signs, and follow directions issued by traffic police on site,” Kimeli said.
The authority added that these measures are necessary to ensure safety as vehicles return to normal volumes on the bypass.
KeNHA also acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the incident and the temporary disruption to traffic. It thanked motorists and residents for their patience during the emergency response period.
“KeNHA appreciates the cooperation, patience, and understanding demonstrated by motorists and residents during the emergency response period,” the notice said.
KeNHA said it remains committed to ensuring safety on national highways and responding promptly to incidents that affect traffic flow.
The Nairobi Southern Bypass is a key transport corridor linking Mombasa Road to other major routes around the capital.
Any disruption on the road often has a significant impact on traffic movement, especially during peak hours. KeNHA said it will continue to work closely with relevant agencies to manage incidents and keep roads open and safe for all users.
