A 49-year-old tourist from France, Maud Frederique lost her life on Tuesday, January 20, after her parachute malfunctioned as she engaged in paragliding with her husband in Iten.
According to the Elgeyo Marakwet county commander Peter Mulinge, the deceased, with her husband, set off at a resort in Iten and successfully flew towards Nyaru in Keiyo South subcounty each in their own parachute.
However, on their way back, the husband, Pierre Laurens got concerned after he lost both radio and mobile phone contact with his wife.
“He decided to land his parachute in Iten town to find out the whereabouts of the deceased,” the commander said.
The husband contacted her again using the radio contact which was received by a stranger who informed him that she was involved in an accident and that she was being rushed to Iten county referral hospital (ICRH) for treatment.
He went to the hospital and found her at the ICU where she was being attended to by the medics. She had suffered from a pelvic fracture, internal bleeding and low blood pressure. She later succumbed to her injuries.
The commander said it was established that her parachute had a puncture and blew off occasioning the fall.
Mulinge said the two French nationals had come to the country as tourists on January 17 and were due to depart on January 31st.
Her body is being preserved at the Iten hospital mortuary as arrangements are being made to transfer it to Lee funeral home in Nairobi.
