Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Thursday met with a group of young Kenyans, who had paid him a courtesy visit.

He urged them to register as voters, saying their involvement is essential to strengthening the country’s democracy.

Matiang'i said he spent the day engaging the group of Gen Zs, encouraging them to take voter registration seriously and ensure their voices are represented in national decision-making.

“I encouraged them to register and be heard. A strong democracy begins with young people choosing to participate,” he said.

Matiang'i noted that the youth make up the largest share of Kenya’s population, yet their turnout in elections often remains lower than expected.

He said increased youth participation would help shape leadership, public policy, and accountability in the years ahead.

His remarks come amid growing national conversations about the political power of the Gen Z demographic.

Matiang’i is among the presidential hopefuls in the 2027 general elections.
