Three among the top students in 2025 KCSE from Kaundu mixed day and boarding secondary school, Catherine Musenya, Brian Wambua and  Caroline Mutethya display cash awards they received as tokens of appreciation for their exemplary performance as they are mobbed by other students/Musembi Nzengu.

Little-known Kaundu secondary school in Mwingi, Kituo county was last week thrust into celebration following a stellar performance in the 2025 KCSE exams.

Three of the school's top performers were given cash prizes  after scoring A- and B+ grades in the exam.

The trio; Catherine Musenya, who scored an A-; her twin sister Caroline Mutethya, who got a B+; and Brian Wambua (B—) were honoured during the impromptu ceremony that was organized by the school’s patron, Solomon Kathuo.

Only the three of the 154 candidates who sat the exam attended due to short notice.

“The school has been propelled into the limelight. Against all odds, you have achieved what many thought impossible,” Kathuo said.

The event, held at the school in remote Mumoni ward, Mwingi North constituency, created a carnival-like atmosphere as students, teachers, and parents mingled, took photos, and celebrated their achievements.

Despite challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and limited student accommodation, Kaundu Secondary emerged as the county leader in university-bound students. Out of 154 candidates, 152 qualified for direct admission to the university, surpassing Kitui School, which had 149 students with direct university entry points. The school had a mean score of 8.6, exceeding its targeted 8.0.

Kathuo credited the success to strong management, teacher dedication, student discipline, and shielding the school from political interference. School board chairman Peter Wambua and Principal David Murathi hailed the results as a testament to the school’s potential and called for continued support from local leadership and stakeholders to sustain its growth.
