Njoroge Kibugu capped a dominant Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing with a commanding victory at the season-ending Absa Invitational Series at Karen Country Club, securing both the tournament title and the overall Order of Merit crown.
The Windsor Golf & Country Club professional began the final round tied for the lead with Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera at eight-under par but pulled clear with a composed six-under-par 64 to close the tournament on 14-under-par 196.
His final round featured seven birdies at the 6th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes, against a lone bogey at the third, as he asserted control down the stretch.
The victory confirmed Kibugu as the inaugural Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing Order of Merit champion, finishing the season on 1,497 points after four tournament wins and consistent top finishes. He also earned Sh400,000 from the tournament’s Sh2 million prize purse.
“This one means a lot to me,” said Kibugu. “Coming into the season finale, I wasn’t feeling my best after the holiday break, but I trusted my game and focused on giving myself chances. Winning the Order of Merit feels like a real statement and a reward for the work I’ve put in.”
Nsanzuwera finished second on nine-under-par 201 after another steady performance. He made a strong start with birdies at the first two holes but dropped shots at the fourth, fifth and 15th before closing with birdies at 17 and 18 to secure runner-up honours.
His finish saw him end the season second on the Order of Merit with 1,317 points. “I started well, but mistakes early on cost me momentum,” said Nsanzuwera. “Still, finishing second overall is a strong result, and I’m proud of the season.”
Amateur Taimur Malik impressed to finish third on eight-under-par 202 after a closing five-under-par 65. Mutahi Kibugu placed fourth on four-under-par 206, while Isaiah Otuke finished fifth on three-under-par 207. Zimbabwe’s Visitor Mapwanya fired the lowest round of the tournament, a seven-under-par 63, to finish tied sixth on two-under-par 208 alongside Greg Snow and Mike Kisia.
Kibugu believes the Sunshine Development Tour has significantly raised the standard of Kenyan professionals ahead of the Kenya Open and continental competition.
“For the first time, we are going into the Kenya Open having played close to 15 high-level tournaments,” he said. “That experience is massive.”
Looking ahead to the Sunshine Tour in South Africa, Kibugu feels better equipped after mixed results last time out. “Previously, I didn’t have enough competitive golf behind me,” he said.
“Now I’m sharper mentally and technically, and that gives me belief going forward.”
Attention now turns to the Big Easy Tour Playoff at Modderfontein Golf Club from January 27–29, where the top 12 players on the combined Order of Merit will earn direct Sunshine Tour cards.
