New testimony in the ongoing manslaughter case against the operators of Body by Design (Omnicare Medical Ltd) has painted a grim picture of the events leading up to the death of 47‑year‑old Lucy Wambui Kamau following a cosmetic surgery procedure last year.

Earlier this week at the Kibera High Court, Mr. Francis Nganga Mundia, the widower of the late Lucy Wambui, took the stand to recount the final moments of his wife’s life after she underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) and liposuction procedure at the controversial Nairobi clinic.

According to court testimony, Ms. Wambui had visited Body by Design on October 16, 2024, for abdominal fat removal — a procedure she paid approximately Ksh 693,000 for.

Mr. Nganga told the court that when he first saw his wife a day after the surgery, she was in visible distress, complaining of severe abdominal pain and difficulty breathing.

Her clothing was soaked with blood and body fluids, and a foul smell resembling human waste was emanating from her

Despite his concerns, staff at the clinic allegedly dismissed the symptoms as normal post‑surgical effects and provided minimal care.

The situation worsened over the following days, with Wambui reportedly screaming that she was dying as her pain intensified.

In a devastating moment recounted by her husband, Lucy allegedly asked him to take care of their children and said she feared she was not going to survive.

On October 22, 2024, Wambui was discharged from Body by Design despite not having fully recovered, and within minutes of arriving home, her condition deteriorated sharply.
Efforts to return her to the clinic were thwarted when they found the facility closed and deserted.

The family then rushed her to Nairobi Hospital, where doctors were alarmed by the foul odour.

Emergency surgery revealed extensive internal damage — including intestinal perforations with significant contamination of her abdominal cavity — and she was admitted to intensive care.

Lucy Wambui later died on October 26, 2024, succumbing to the complications caused by the botched procedure.

The prosecution has charged three individuals — including the clinic’s directors and the attending surgeon — with unlawfully causing her death. They have denied any wrongdoing.

The case has renewed scrutiny on the regulation of cosmetic clinics in Kenya and the licenses and standards under which they operate, as authorities and advocacy groups call for stringent oversight to prevent similar tragedies.
