Tucked into the Lemek Conservancy in Aitong, where the Mara River bends, and wildlife rules the clock, Muthu Mara River Lodge has officially opened its doors, adding a fresh chapter to the Maasai Mara’s ever-evolving safari story.

The lodge welcomed its first guests on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, becoming MGM Muthu Hotels’ second property in the region and further cementing the group’s growing footprint in Kenya’s tourism landscape.

Designed to sit naturally within its surroundings, the lodge offers 81 guest rooms, some of them facing the river itself — close enough for guests to watch hippos surface at dawn or spot crocodiles drifting with the current.

Wildlife encounters are not scheduled events here; they are part of daily life. Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and a rich mix of birdlife move freely through the conservancy, creating year-round game viewing opportunities.

Beyond classic game drives, guests can explore the Mara through guided bush walks, sundowners in open landscapes, night safaris and cultural interactions with the local Maasai community.

The lodge’s location within Lemek Conservancy also allows off-road driving, offering closer and more flexible wildlife encounters than the main reserve.

Accessibility is another quiet advantage. Muthu Mara River Lodge sits less than five minutes from Mara North Airstrip, placing it within easy reach for fly-in safaris and balloon safari launch sites.

For those keen on conservation-focused experiences, the Ol Chorro Rhino Sanctuary — home to the rare Southern white rhinos Koffi Annan and Queen Elizabeth — is about a 45-minute drive away.

While the wilderness takes centre stage, the lodge has also been designed with modern travellers in mind.

One of the largest convention facilities in the Maasai Mara, capable of hosting up to 200 delegates, positions the lodge as a destination for corporate retreats, incentive travel and private events — without sacrificing its safari soul.

Under the theme “Masai Mara to the World,” Muthu Mara River Lodge is among the first in the region to introduce high-speed Starlink internet connectivity. The move reflects a growing shift toward longer stays, remote working and business travel, allowing guests to remain digitally connected while fully immersed in nature.

Located roughly 180 kilometres from Nairobi, the lodge offers a seamless transition from city life to open savannah — where meetings can end with a sunset and the soundtrack is the call of the wild.

Speaking on the opening, Julian Burton, Director of Operations at MGM Muthu Hotels (Chairman’s Office – Portugal), described the lodge as a reflection of the brand’s long-term vision in Kenya.

“Muthu Mara River Lodge brings together nature, people, and purpose. It reflects our continued commitment to Kenya and represents a thoughtful evolution of the modern safari experience,” he said.
