Police in Konoin subcounty, Bomet county are investigating an incident where a 56-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his son under unclear circumstances.
Neighbours allege that the two fought over food but police said they are still investigating the reason for the killing.
Konoin Subcounty Police Commander Mohammed Godana said police received information indicating that the deceased, Joel Kosgei, was killed by his 25-year-old son.
Officers moved to the scene and arrested the suspect.
However, before police’s arrival, angry neighbours descended on the suspect and assaulted him.
The suspect sustained injuries but survived after police intervened and rescued him from the mob.
He was rushed to Kapkatet Hospital in Kericho county, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
The suspect was detained at Konoin police station as investigations continue.
Police said the motive behind the incident has not yet been established and described the circumstances surrounding the killing as unclear.
Pastor Nathan Rono, a local church leader said the father and son had been involved in a prolonged dispute.
Another resident said the son arrived late at the home appearing to be drunk and started demanding food from his father.
“The deceased was caught unawares by the suspect who picked up a blunt object and hacked his father on the head, killing him instantly,” he said.
After the incident, the suspect reported the matter to a neighbour, prompting involvement of local authorities.
Godana said the suspect will be processed and taken to court.
“Once the case file is ready the suspect will be taken to court to face relevant charges,” he said.
Rono has urged residents to avoid taking the law into their hands and seek assistance from the authorities and the church to resolve all forms of domestic disputes.
“Killing or violence is not a solution at all. We know there are many disputes within families but the best ways to deal with the same is through dialogue,” he said. He said church leaders are always available and ready to mediate whenever they are called upon.
Godana also advised residents to avoid taking the law into their hands and sort out disputes amicably.
