Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has criticised Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro over what she termed as sustained attacks on government plans to securitise funds and other key policy initiatives.

Wahome defended the securitisation plan, saying it would unlock much-needed financing for development projects across the country.

She argued that the funds belong to Kenyans and that the government, under President William Ruto, had been given the mandate to pursue policies that advance the aspirations and development goals of the nation.

Speaking during a thanksgiving church service for Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau at Kianwe Primary School, Wahome said the government must raise adequate resources to complete stalled projects that were initiated by previous administrations.

She said the government will not shy away from borrowing to fund programmes aimed at improving the economy, noting that past administrations had also relied on external borrowing, including the Eurobond issued during the Jubilee government.

“The government has a responsibility to ensure development continues. Borrowing is not new, and it has been used before to support critical national projects,” Wahome said.

Nyoro has been vocal in criticising the government’s growing reliance on securitisation of funds, arguing that Kenya’s public debt has risen to over Sh12 trillion.

He has claimed that the Kenya Kwanza administration has borrowed Sh3.5 trillion in the last three years.

Wahome, who was accompanied by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, Ndia MP George Kariuki and other leaders allied to President Ruto, urged the Mt Kenya region to rally behind the Head of State and support his re-election next year.

Ndia MP George Kariuki dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other opposition leaders, accusing them of undermining government policies and programmes.

He said Kirinyaga County would remain firmly behind the Kenya Kwanza administration, which he noted had delivered tangible development to the region.
