“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that there will be a temporary closure of road sections on Uhuru Highway/Haile Selassie Avenue Roundabout,” acting Director General of KeNHA Luka Kimeli said.

The first phase of the exercise will begin on Friday, January 16, 2026, to Sunday, January 18, 2026.

The second phase will be done in phased intervals during off-peak hours from 10 pm to 5 am, between Friday, January 23, 2026, and Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Kimeli stated that the works are part of the authority’s ongoing effort to improve road quality and ensure safer and smoother journeys for motorists.

“This is to allow for reinstatement of the Tarmac (Asphalt Concrete Layer),” he said.

“Motorists are advised to follow the traffic management plan in place and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals on site.”

The authority urged drivers to plan their travel accordingly and follow alternative routes where possible to minimise congestion.

KeNHA has provided a customer care line (0700 423 606) and email ([email protected]) for inquiries.

The authority also reminded the public that safety remains a shared responsibility, emphasising, “#RoadSafety Starts With You.”

This comes even as KeNHA formally began extensive road improvement works along the routes linking JKIA to ABC Place in Westlands, aimed at enhancing safety and reducing traffic congestion.

The works, which began on Thursday, include capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification along the 27-kilometre stretch.

The authority said the works on capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification along the James Gichuru - JKIA (A8/B10) Highway are ongoing in earnest.

Motorists using the affected sections are urged to exercise caution, observe all traffic signage and maintain low speeds while passing through the project area.

"Motorists plying the affected route are advised to exercise caution, observe traffic signage, and maintain low speeds within the project corridor," KeNHA said.

Announcing plans for the exercise on December 12, 2025, President William Ruto said the initiative aims to enhance road safety, ease traffic flow and improve the aesthetic appeal of one of Kenya’s busiest highways.

The President acknowledged the challenges motorists have faced on the lower deck of the Mombasa Road Expressway.

KeNHA stated that upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve the area’s aesthetic appeal, promote environmental sustainability and upgrade infrastructure and safety standards within the region.
