Motorcycle registrations in Kenya have experienced dramatic fluctuations over the past five years.
In 2021, the country recorded 262,624 new registrations, marking a peak in uptake. However, the following years saw a steep decline: 2022 dropped to 123,160, and 2023 fell even further to 53,329.
A modest rebound occurred in 2024, with registrations rising to 63,713, hinting at a slow recovery. But the most striking shift came in 2025, where registrations surged to 145,714 between January and November alone.
This more than doubled the previous year’s total, signaling renewed momentum in the motorcycle market. The sharp rise could reflect increased affordability, expanded credit access, or a shift in transport preferences, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where motorcycles serve as vital mobility tools.
The overall trajectory reveals a volatile but resilient sector. While the dip between 2021 and 2023 was significant, the 2025 resurgence suggests underlying demand remains strong. Such patterns may also mirror broader economic cycles, fuel price dynamics, or policy interventions targeting boda boda operations.
