Kenya Sevens speedstar Patrick Odongo in action against South Africa during the Hong Kong Sevens/HANDOUT

Shujaa jetted out of the country on Monday for a six-day high-performance training camp in Cape Town, South Africa, as part of their preparations for the World Rugby Sevens Series Division Two.

The high-performance camp is for a critical phase in Shujaa’s build-up to the Division Two opener, which will be hosted at Nyayo Stadium on February 14–15.

Training in South Africa is expected to provide the squad with access to elite facilities, exposure to high-level competitive environments, and structured performance sessions tailored to the demands of the series.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Director of Rugby Paul Odera reiterated that the camp is part of a broader high-performance pathway aimed at ensuring Shujaa are competitively ready for the demanding Division Two campaign.

Odera noted that hosting the opening leg in Nairobi adds extra motivation, with the team eager to make a strong statement in front of the home crowd.

Upon their return from South Africa, Shujaa will enter a final phase of local preparations as the technical bench fine-tunes combinations and finalises selections ahead of the Nairobi tournament.

With the countdown to February well underway, the Cape Town camp represents a significant milestone in Kenya Sevens’ journey towards a successful HSBC SVNS Division Two campaign.

Shujaa are expected to face Uruguay, the USA and Germany, with a further three teams set to join them from World Sevens Series Division Three, which will be held in Dubai later this month.

KRU Director in charge of Sevens, Humphrey Kayange, expressed confidence that the team can reclaim core status with a strong showing in this year’s Division Two series.

“I do not doubt that with the quality of players we have, the hunger within the squad and the technical ability of our team, we can be in Division One by the end of the season,” said Kayange.

He added that hosting the first leg of the series presents a perfect opportunity to set the tone for the campaign. “We have a good opportunity to lay down a marker in the opener, and I believe the boys will be up to the challenge.

They are relishing it, and we want to put on a strong performance backed by our fans and get off to a good start,” he added.
