Hannington Kiplagat/ ESPORT KENYA
Kenya’s eFootball Mobile champion Hannington Kiplagat will represent the country at the inaugural Africa eFootball Championship in Casablanca, Morocco. The event will take place from January 15 to 16, 2026, at the Cathédrale Sacré-Cœur.
The tournament will be played on eFootball, the title published by Tokyo-based Konami. Konami is the official video game partner of the Confederation of African Football for AFCON 2025 and 2027.
The same platform will also be used for FIFAe competitions. The 20-year-old Kiplagat is making his first international appearance after rising quickly on the local esports scene.
Kipalagat hails from Kibomet in Trans Nzoia County, and he is a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student at Multimedia University of Kenya. Kenya has been drawn in Group F alongside Mali, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
The group is expected to be highly competitive, but Kiplagat has set the bar high to realise his dream. Kiplagat started competitive gaming two years ago just for fun.
He believes the federation’s preparation has put him in good standing. Coach Mohammed Nurki backed the youngster to deliver. He said focus will be key. Nurki added that Kiplagat is in good form and urged him to take one match at a time.
The championship will feature 37 African nations divided into eight groups. Group A includes Angola, Niger, Malawi, DR Congo and Madagascar, while Group B has Djibouti, Botswana, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Uganda.
Group C features Ghana, Liberia, South Sudan, Benin and Somalia, with hosts Morocco leading Group D alongside Togo, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Eswatini. Group E includes Gabon, Congo, the Central African Republic, The Gambia and Guinea. Group G has Tunisia, Mauritania, Nigeria and Cameroon, while Group H features Libya, Ethiopia, South Africa and Senegal.
