A woman is receiving treatment in hospital after sustaining two gunshot wounds in Kyuso, Kitui County.
Police say the incident occurred at the home of an officer on the evening of January 7, 2026.
The officer reportedly left the house for a local shop, leaving the woman inside.
On his return, he heard gunshots from the house and alerted colleagues.
Officers who responded found the woman on the floor with gunshot injuries.
Police recovered a firearm from the scene, which had two bullet holes in the walls.
One cartridge and a bullet head were reportedly found on a mattress.
The woman was initially admitted to Kyuso Sub-County Hospital before being transferred to Mwingi Sub-County Hospital for specialized care.
Her condition is described as critical.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether negligence was involved.
Police say they plan to speak with the woman to establish how the incident occurred.
While police investigations are ongoing, officials note that suicide-related incidents remain a public concern.
Statistics indicate that up to five cases are reported daily in Kenya, with men representing the majority of victims.
The World Health Organization identifies factors such as unemployment, loss, academic or legal pressures, financial difficulties, substance misuse, mental health conditions, and family history as contributors to suicidal behaviour.
The government continues to implement measures aimed at addressing these challenges.
