The death of Raila Odinga has plunged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into turmoil, revealing two factions that threaten to fracture this once vibrant, cohesive national party.
While members have the right to express differing opinions, it would be detrimental to Kenya’s democracy if ODM were reduced to a minor regional player or, worse, ceased to exist altogether.
For over two decades, Raila effectively unified the party, enabling it to hold the government accountable and to resonate with voters nationwide. Under his leadership, ODM had a clear identity and ideological framework, speaking in one voice.
Now, it is imperative that those at the helm prioritise the party’s integrity above personal interests.
Kenya needs ODM, alongside other strong national parties, to ensure a healthy political landscape. We urge party leader Oburu Oginga to restore order and cohesion among members.
This internal discord diverts ODM MPs from their legislative duties, a role funded by taxpayers. The chaos hinders their ability to fulfil their responsibilities to the Kenyan people.
Let us rally together, not as factions but as a united front, to honour Raila Odinga’s legacy and strengthen our democracy.
