A string of tragic incidents across Kenya over the New Year period has highlighted the dangers of carelessness, electrocution, and criminal activity.

In Nyandarua county, two young men, aged 20 and 17, drowned at Ragia waterfalls in Njabini on January 2 while attempting to take a selfie at the notorious site.

The victims were part of a group of 11 youth from Rwanyambo Catholic Church on a hiking mission. According to witnesses and police, the pair slipped and fell into the waterfall.

Divers recovered one body over the weekend, while the search for the second continued on Monday.

Officials urged caution for visitors to the site.

In Kisumu county, a man attempting to steal from a locked house in Nyalenda was electrocuted on January 3.

Police reported that the intruder had tampered with electrical appliances when he came into contact with a live wire, resulting in his death.

The body was taken to the mortuary pending autopsy.

Meanwhile, at Mombasa airport an attendant, Jimmy Kitavi, was electrocuted by a conveyor belt while on duty on January 2.

He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

In Kirinyaga county, police arrested a man and a woman in connection with a stupefying and robbery incident in Sagana.

The victims, two men, were drugged and robbed of cash, mobile phones, and jewelry after checking into a restaurant on December 31, 2025.

The suspects, traced to Juja, Kiambu county, were found with the stolen items.

Police confirmed that the victims were responding well to medical attention and investigations were ongoing to determine if additional suspects were involved.

Authorities have issued warnings about the rising cases of stupefying, urging caution during social outings and emphasising the importance of staying with trusted friends.

From waterfalls to workplaces and public spaces, these incidents underscore the need for vigilance, adherence to safety measures, and caution against criminal activities, especially during festive periods.
