A family land dispute in Narok County turned tragic when a man killed his brother and a village elder before being attacked by an irate mob.
The incident occurred in Kaliet village, Sagamian Ward, Narok South Sub-County.
The assailant, identified as Geofrey Chirchir, 37, reportedly attacked his brother, Vincent Chirchir, over a long-standing disagreement over family land.
A village elder, Antony Koske, who rushed to intervene, was also killed.
Another brother was injured and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Assistant Chief Bet Kipkemoi said the brothers had been quarrelling over a one-acre piece of land for several years following the death of their parents.
“We have tried several meetings to reconcile them, but the disputes persisted,” he said.
The chief urged residents to resolve land disputes through dialogue rather than violence.
Andrew Langat, a village elder, said the family had a history of land disagreements, which local leaders have tried to mediate.
He expressed regret over the death of the village elder, describing it as “an unfortunate loss, as he had no part in the dispute.”
Police responded to the scene and took the bodies to a morgue in Longisa, Bomet County.
Investigations are ongoing.
Chief Kipkemoi said security authorities would take measures to prevent further escalation of the family feud.
“We urge families with disputes to use official channels and government assistance to resolve matters peacefully. Violence is never a solution,” he said.
