In a detailed personal statement, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has recounted a dramatic confrontation at a restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

The incident involved Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai and allegedly escalated from verbal accusations to physical violence involving a firearm.

A Quiet Meeting Interrupted

In a detailed Facebook post, Babu Owino revealed that the events took place on a recent afternoon along Lenana Road.

According to the sources, Mr Owino arrived at a popular restaurant at approximately 3:40 p.m. for a scheduled meeting with a senior clergyman.

Because it was the Christmas holiday period, the MP had released his usual security detail and was driving himself. The two men spoke for about twenty minutes before Mr Owino stood up to depart.

As he was leaving, Mr Owino noticed a group of acquaintances at a nearby table. Out of courtesy, he approached them to say hello. This group included the MCA for Kileleshwa, Robert Alai.

"Without provocation, he accused me of being behind alleged social media attacks on his wife,” Babu Owino revealed.

The Escalation

The MP claims he tried to de-escalate the situation. He told Mr Alai that he did not know his wife and had no reason to involve family members in political disputes. He further clarified that he does not engage with the MCA personally, let alone his spouse.

“I have no reason whatsoever to involve innocent family members in politics. It is not my style to advance my politics by attacking women. I hold out respected ladies in the highest regard.”

However, the situation reportedly turned violent. Mr Owino alleges that Mr Alai became aggressive and pushed him. According to the statement, the MCA then drew a pistol and struck the MP on the chest and jaw with the weapon.

This occurred in full view of other patrons at the establishment.

"He appeared to cool down, and we briefly sat... Moments later, he again turned hostile, picked a glass of water from the table, and poured it on my face,” Owino said.

Police Report

Following the incident, a crowd gathered, disturbed by the commotion. To avoid further physical confrontation, Mr Owino left the premises immediately. He proceeded directly to the Kilimani Police Station to record an official statement.

The MP describes the event as a direct attack and a grave threat to his life. He believes the incident was motivated by his political stance.

He has called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take legal action.

Both Babu Owino and Robert Alai are prominent figures within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. While they share a political affiliation, they have a well-documented history of public friction and social media spats regarding party leadership and Nairobi politics.

A Pattern of Harassment

Mr Owino claims this is not an isolated event. He suggests it is part of a sustained campaign of violence against him. He referenced a previous incident in Siaya where he claims goons were organised to attack him during a burial.
