In 2025, Kenya bid farewell to a group of legendary figures who shaped the nation's history. These men and women left behind significant legacies in public service, media, and academia.
From political heavyweights to academic titans, their absence marked the end of an era.

The Political Titans
The nation lost Raila Odinga, a veteran opposition leader who was a central figure in Kenyan politics for over 30 years.
Odinga died in October 2025, aged 80.
He was instrumental in the struggle for multi-party democracy and the creation of the 2010 Constitution.
Another major political loss was Wafula Chebukati, the former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Chebukati passed away on 20 February 2025 at the age of 63. He had been suffering from a short illness caused by a cancerous brain tumor.

He is remembered for overseeing the 2017 and 2022 General Elections.
Cyrus Jirongo, a prominent businessman and politician, also passed away. He was well-known for his influential role during the 1992 elections and served the country as a Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament.

Jirongo died in mid-December 2025 in a controversial road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
Academic and Literary Icons
The world of literature and history lost two of its brightest stars. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, a global literary icon, was celebrated for his novels and plays that challenged injustice.
He is world-renowned for works such as Weep Not, Child and Petals of Blood.
He died in May, aged 87.

Professor Bethwell Allan Ogot, a towering historian, also passed away. His academic work profoundly changed how people study East African history. He is regarded as a giant in the academic field whose research reshaped the understanding of African heritage.
He died on January 30, 2025, at the age of 95, after a brief illness. He was a significant figure in African history and academia, outliving his wife, Grace Ogot, by nearly ten years.
Guardians of Justice and Equality
The Kenyan judiciary and civil society lost several pioneers. Justice Mohammed Ibrahim, a Supreme Court Judge, was the first advocate from the Kenyan Somali community to reach that high position.

He was a known champion for the rights of minorities. He died in December 2025.
Phoebe Asiyo, a trailblazing activist, was also among those who died.

Tragic Departures
Several leaders met their ends through illness or accidents. Dalmas Otieno, the former MP for Rongo, died on 7 September 2025 due to complications from diabetes.
Mathew Lempurkel, the former MP for Laikipia North, died on 24 August 2025. He sustained serious head injuries during a road accident.
