Police officers in Kakamega County have seized a large consignment of narcotic drugs and arrested a suspect following an intelligence-led operation along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road.

The operation targeted a public service vehicle that was intercepted by officers during routine surveillance informed by intelligence. Upon searching, police recovered a substantial quantity of dry green plant material suspected to be Cannabis sativa.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the narcotics had been concealed in several bags and a sack, carefully packaged into multiple bales. The total weight of the recovered drugs was approximately 48 kilograms.

Police estimated the street value of the seized narcotics at about Sh1.4 million, marking what authorities described as a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb drug trafficking in the region.

One suspect was arrested at the scene and escorted to a police station, where the recovered drugs were secured as exhibits. The suspect remains in lawful custody pending processing and arraignment in court.

The seizure underscores the growing use of intelligence-led policing in the fight against narcotic drugs, which continue to pose a threat to communities across the country.

Drug trafficking and abuse have been linked to wider criminal networks, as well as public health and safety concerns.

In a statement, the National Police Service reiterated its resolve to combat the illegal drug trade, noting that such activities undermine national security and the well-being of citizens.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related criminal networks, which pose a serious threat to public health, safety, and national security,” the statement said.

The police also appealed to members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by sharing information on drug-related activities. Citizens were encouraged to report suspicious activity through toll-free emergency numbers 999, 911, or 112.

Authorities said public cooperation remains critical in disrupting drug supply chains and preventing narcotics from reaching communities.

The crackdown follows weeks after police in Kiambu County intercepted a significant consignment of bhang following a targeted anti-narcotics operation in Kibiku.

The operation was conducted by officers from Kibiku Police Station in collaboration with the Kirangari Location Assistant Chief after a tip-off from the public.

According to authorities, the team recovered 1,508 rolls of bhang and 1.5 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis, with an estimated street value of Sh200,000.

Police arrested one suspect during the operation.

NPS commended residents for sharing timely information that led to the successful recovery, saying public cooperation remains critical in disrupting the illegal drug trade.
