President William Ruto has congratulated Kenyan darts player David Munyua following his historic victory at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship in London, hailing the win as a proud moment for the country and a landmark achievement for Kenyan sport.

In a statement issued on Friday, the President praised Munyua for his remarkable comeback victory over Belgium’s Mike De Decker at the iconic Alexandra Palace, popularly known as Ally Pally.

“By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history,” President Ruto said.

“You have made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage.”

Munyua’s win marked the first time a Kenyan player has recorded a victory at the PDC World Darts Championship, one of the most prestigious events in the sport.

The tournament draws the world’s top darts players and is watched by millions of fans globally, making Munyua’s breakthrough a significant milestone not only for his career but also for darts in Africa.

Making his debut, Kenyan Munyua overturned a two-set deficit to defeat world number 18 Mike De Decker 3–2, sending the Belgian star home and announcing his arrival on the global darts stage.

The performance earned him widespread praise from fans and commentators, who labelled the match the tournament as a  thrilling encounter.

President Ruto said Munyua’s achievement symbolised the resilience and determination of Kenyan athletes, noting that his success would inspire young sportsmen and women across the country to pursue non-traditional disciplines.

“As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you,” the President added.

“Bring the trophy home.”

Munyua’s qualification for the World Darts Championship had already made history, but his victory at Ally Pally has elevated him into the global spotlight.

“It’s crazy. It is so big for me to even express it right now. I did not expect it but I am so excited about it. I am not just happy for myself but also for guys back in my country who are going crazy. They are very happy about it,” Munyua said of his historic victory. 

With the backing of the President and the nation, Munyua now carries Kenya’s hopes into the next round, aiming to extend his dream run and further cement his legacy on the world darts stage.
