One person has died in a grisly road traffic accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County.

Police said the unidentified man died on the spot, while three others sustained serious injuries after a motor vehicle they were travelling in was involved in the fatal accident in Sultan Hamud, Mukaa Subcounty, on Friday.

The accident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 travelling from Nairobi towards Mombasa. It collided head-on with a trailer moving in the opposite direction.

Sultan Hamud Traffic Base Commander Patrick Mwando said the car had four occupants at the time of the accident.

"One of the car's occupants died on the spot, while the remaining three sustained serious injuries. The injured victims were initially rushed to Kilome Nursing Home in Emali for emergency treatment before being airlifted by helicopter to Nairobi for specialised medical care," Mwando said.

The wreckage was towed to Sultan Hamud Police Station, awaiting inspection and necessary action.

Mwando said investigations into the accident had been launched.

He added that the cause of the accident was not immediately established.

Mwando urged motorists to exercise caution while using the busy highway, given the heavy traffic on the road.

The incident happened hours after a man sustained injuries when a trailer he was travelling in was involved in an accident along the same highway in the early hours of Friday morning.

The man, a turn boy on the ill-fated trailer, was injured after the driver lost control and the vehicle landed in a stream at the Nairobi-Namanga Road interchange near Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River, Machakos County.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at about 3.00 am on Friday.

The trailer's driver reportedly escaped unhurt, while the injured man was rushed to Shalom Community Hospital for treatment.

Police said the cause of the accident was yet to be established.

The wreckage was removed from the stream and towed to Athi River Police Station pending inspection and necessary action.

Road accidents occurred even as the government deploys mobile traffic courts to enforce traffic rules and regulations during the festive season.
