The drive organised by the Department of Transport involved public safety education at various busy roads and towns in Kitui on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The road safety campaign dubbed Operation 'Fika salama, uhai Kwanza' was decided during a consultative meeting between the government officials and stakeholders on road safety at a hotel in Kitui town on Monday.
The campaign concentrated on the Kitui-Thika road, Kitui-Mwingi road, Kitui-Kibwezi road and Kitui-Machakos road, where most of the accidents happen.
The forum, chaired by Roads Executive Reuben Itiko, brought together representatives from NTSA, KeNHA, traffic police, matatus, taxis and boda boda operators and members of the Kitui county assembly transport and safety committee.
The participants were unanimous on the need to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in order aimed at reducing road traffic risks and fatalities in Kitui county.
Itiko emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing road safety, citing the alarming rate of road accidents and fatalities in Kitui in recent times.
"All of us as government, stakeholders and citizens can build a transport system where safely is not an option but a shared responsibility," the CECM said.
He said it was imperative for stakeholders to work together to identify practical solutions and implement effective measures to reduce the number of road crashes.
“In this festive season, let us renew our commitment to zero accidents. Every journey must begin with caution and end with safety. No celebration is worth a life lost and no county can thrive when it's people are dying on the road,” Itiko said.
He added that during the festive season, all players should renew our commitment to the goal of achieving zero accidents in Kitui.
Chief Officer for Transport Peter Musya said the campaign is aimed at instilling a culture of road safety and shared responsibility.
“Through these integrated interventions, Kitui county can significantly reduce festive- season accidents, protect vulnerable road users and foster safer mobility for all road users,” he said.
The Kitui Central traffic police base commander, Chesire Kibor said his department would ensure that the traffic rules are enforced.
