In response to a tragic surge in road fatalities, Chief Justice Martha Koome has outlined a comprehensive strategy to bolster safety on highways during the high-traffic festive season.
With 17 lives already lost in early December 2025, the Chief Justice’s plan emphasises a dual approach: immediate behavioural changes from the public and intensified enforcement from state agencies.
The initial phase of the strategy focuses on preventative measures and public participation.
Central to this is a direct appeal to Kenyan motorists to strictly adhere to traffic laws, specifically targeting the primary causes of accidents: speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
To create a system of communal oversight, the Judiciary encourages citizens to actively report traffic offences through emergency lines 999, 911, and 112.
Furthermore, the plan mandates a "multi-agency" collaboration, ensuring that different arms of government share information and prioritise joint enforcement. This visibility is set to be most concentrated in "high-risk corridors," where historical data suggests accidents are most frequent.
