Akonnor demands response as Gor Mahia face Homeboyz

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor says his immediate focus is on delivering a committed performance that restores confidence as the champions push for three points against Kakamega Homeboyz today.

As K’Ogalo look to build momentum before the end of the year, Akonnor insists that every fixture must be approached with respect for the opponent and a strong winning mentality.

Looking ahead to the club’s next home assignment at Kasarani today, the coach described the upcoming run as critical as Gor Mahia seeks to arrest a recent dip in form.

The champions were held to a 1–1 draw away to Bandari shortly after suffering a 1–0 defeat to arch-rivals AFC Leopards — results that stalled their earlier progress in the Premier League and served as a reminder that consistency is vital in the title race.

Akonnor stressed that the Homeboyz encounter presents an opportunity for improvement, noting that the team showed resilience in those matches but lacked a cutting edge at key moments.

He said that shortcomings must now translate into greater urgency and sharper execution in both defensive and attacking phases as the season edges toward its decisive stage.

In the five league matches heading into the Homeboyz clash, Gor Mahia have registered two wins — a 2–0 victory over Kenya Police and a narrow 1–0 triumph against Tusker — but have also endured setbacks, including a heavy 4–1 loss to APS Bomet and a 1–1 draw with Ulinzi Stars, underlining the mixed form Akonnor is keen to stabilise.

Squad selection has also been a major talking point this season, particularly the absence of right-back Lewis Esambe Bandi, a high-profile signing from AFC Leopards.

Bandi is yet to make his competitive debut for K’Ogalo since joining on a two-year deal. Akonnor explained that the defender has been sidelined largely due to an injury sustained while on Harambee Stars duty during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) period.

Although Bandi has recently returned to training, he has yet to log match minutes. His continued absence has forced the coach to rely on established defensive options despite expectations that he would strengthen the back line following an impressive spell with the national team.

Former Bandari FC and Harambee Stars defender Siraj Mohammed is another player who has struggled for game time. The left-back joined Gor Mahia, hoping to challenge for a starting role, but has rarely featured in league action, prompting reports that he may seek a move away during the upcoming transfer window in search of regular minutes.

Credible local football reports indicate that Siraj is exploring options ahead of the January window, highlighting both the competitiveness of the Gor Mahia squad and the importance of match rhythm in a player’s development.

In contrast, young full-back Bryton Onyona has firmly established himself in Akonnor’s plans. Onyona has started regularly since the beginning of the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League campaign, earning praise for his defensive solidity and attacking intent.

His form was rewarded with a maiden call-up to the Harambee Stars during the November international window. Akonnor has publicly described Onyona as a “typical European left-back,” citing his intelligence and growth on and off the ball.

The youngster’s consistency has brought stability on the flank, a key reason he has been preferred ahead of more experienced alternatives. The coach reiterated that selection decisions are based on match readiness, tactical balance and work ethic, noting that while established players must deliver when fit, emerging talents who demonstrate commitment and understanding of the team’s demands will continue to be trusted as the season progresses.
