On Saturday, December 13, 2025, the Capital One Arena witnessed an emotional yet historic event that sawJohn Cena close the book on his 24-year tenure with WWE at Saturday Night's Main Event.
His retirement marked the end of one of the most celebrated and decorated careers in wrestling history.
This final chapter was not a victory. Cena faced Gunther, 'The Ring General', in a contest that served as a symbolic passing of the torch.

Ushering in Ruthless Aggression
Cena first signed with WWE in 2001. He began his competitive journey as ‘The Prototype’ in the developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling.
His memorable main roster debut occurred on 27 June 2002 on SmackDown. Cena answered an open challenge from Kurt Angle, a future Hall of Famer.
He immediately made an impact by proclaiming he possessed "ruthless aggression." He then slapped Angle across the face.

Despite looking impressive in defeat, his rise to the top was not immediate. He toiled in the undercard and struggled with an identity crisis.

Defining the Face of the Franchise
By 2005, after three years of grinding, Cena finally reached the top. He filled the void left by stars like The Rock and Stone-Cold Steve Austin. He soon became the face of the promotion.
Cena won his first world championship at WrestleMania 21. He soundly defeated JBL for the title. His dominance in the main event scene was quickly established.
High-profile rivalries with the illustrious likes of Triple H, Edge, and Randy Orton solidified his elite status.
His career became defined by groundbreaking accolades. Cena finished his in-ring run holding a record 17 world championship wins recognized by WWE.
He secured his seventeenth world title at WrestleMania 41, breaking Ric Flair’s long-standing record. He also main-evented WrestleMania six times.

He achieved the coveted Grand Slam status by winning the Intercontinental Championship on 10 November 2025.
The Final Bow and Global Impact
Cena’s retirement tour culminated on 13 December. Gunther won the tournament to earn the final match spot.
In the highly anticipated bout, which lasted just under 25 minutes, Gunther relentlessly applied a sleeper hold. Cena was forced to submit.

This tap-out signalled the end of his time in the ring. It was the first time Cena had tapped out in over 20 years.

Outside the ropes, Cena is celebrated for his commitment to philanthropy. He has granted more than 650 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also successfully transitioned into a film career.
Cena will remain a constant fixture in the company. He has signed a new five-year contract as WWE’s Global Ambassador. He will continue to shape the next generation in this role.
