Who is Truphena Muthoni?

Truphena Muthoni, who hails from Nyeri County, gained national attention after achieving a Guinness World Record earlier in 2025.

She secured the world record for continuously hugging a tree for 48 hours. This initial feat took place at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi in February 2025.

Muthoni uses tree-hugging to highlight the link between environmental conservation and mental health.

In December 2025, she began a new challenge in Nyeri town, attempting to hug a tree for 72 consecutive hours, aiming to break her own record. Her dedication requires adherence to strict rules, including no food, no water, and no breaks.

Preparation and Recognition

Muthoni is also a musician who plays the guitar and piano. Her intensive preparation for the endurance challenge included mini attempts, one lasting 35 hours in a single go, and another lasting 60 hours.

Her activism has garnered significant state recognition. Beyond the HSC award from the President, her success was previously celebrated by Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNEP, Ababu Namwamba.

Namwamba noted that her historic feat drew "global attention" to the power of youth activism.

The recent engagement with high-ranking government officials confirms that Muthoni’s message—that nature holds restorative power—is resonating at the highest levels of Kenyan governance.
