The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commenced a comprehensive inquiry into the road traffic accident that led to the death of politician Cyrus Jirongo.
Jirongo succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway near Karai area on the night of 13th December 2025.
The DCI has now released preliminary details of the investigation, including recovered CCTV footage that establishes a timeline of events leading up to the fatal collision.

Fatal Collision Timeline
The accident involved Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd.
According to the DCI, the collision occurred at approximately 02:19 A.M., resulting in a rear-end impact.

“The accident resulted in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away,” DCI updated.

CCTV footage recovered from Eagol Petrol Station provided a clear chronological view of the final moments.
- 02:18:40 A.M.: The deceased drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel.
- 02:19:10 A.M.: He stopped at the station’s exit and, at 02:19:19 A.M., made a right turn, driving back towards Nairobi direction.
- 02:19:25 A.M.: The CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into Jirongo’s vehicle. The PSV bus then stopped approximately 50 metres away.
Driver Interrogation and Next Steps
Detectives have interrogated the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji. He had previously recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base and is currently out on cash bail.
He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action.
The DCI has also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and a fuel attendant, both of whom provided personal accounts of the events.

Further analysis is underway, including the CCTV footage. Statements will be recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses.
The DCI also stated they are examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident. This includes recording statements from individuals he interacted with during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant, Nairobi.
Commitment to Credible Investigation
Upon completion of the analysis, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The DCI conveyed its condolences to the family. It also assured the public of its commitment to conducting a "thorough, impartial, and credible" investigation.
Jirongo was a well-known political figure who previously served as a Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency.
