A strange quiet settled over the Capital One Arena this past weekend as John Cena concluded his 24-year tenure with WWE.
The legendary superstar took his final bow after a demanding match at "Saturday Night's Main Event. This final bout was not a celebratory victory, but rather a symbolic passing of the torch.
Cena faced 'The Ring General', Gunther, the current standard bearer of the modern era.
A Legacy of Stability
Cena first signed with WWE in 2001. He debuted on SmackDown on 27 June 2002. Initially known as ‘The Prototype’, he soon adopted the ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ persona, which featured freestyle raps.

Cena arrived just as the 'Attitude Era' was fading. Top stars like The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin were winding down or moving to Hollywood.
The company needed a new central figure, and Cena filled that void with certainty. He quickly became the face of the promotion’s shift toward a family-friendly image. This consistency was crucial for WWE to reinvent itself.
"For twenty years, he’s been the constant in a business built on chaos, and tonight that constancy slips gently out of our hands."
Defining the Record Books
Cena’s career became defined by groundbreaking accolades. He is recognised as one of the greatest professional wrestlers in history.
Cena main-evented WrestleMania six times throughout his career. He held 17 world championships, which is the highest number recognised by WWE.
He broke Ric Flair’s long-standing record by winning his seventeenth world championship at WrestleMania 41.
This was not a ceremonial victory, but a genuine title win. Cena also achieved the coveted Grand Slam status. He finally secured the Intercontinental Championship—the one title that had eluded him—on 10 November 2025.
By winning the Intercontinental Championship, he closed his competitive career with every major accolade WWE offered.

The Final Challenge
Cena announced his retirement from in-ring action at the end of 2025. His final opponent was determined via a tournament. Gunther won the tournament to secure the final spot.
In the highly anticipated final match, Cena was forced to submit to Gunther. The match lasted just under 25 minutes. Gunther relentlessly applied a sleeper hold on Cena.

Cena’s tap-out signalled that his time in the ring had concluded. This was the first time Cena had tapped out in more than 20 years.
Following the loss, WWE champions CM Punk and Cody Rhodes celebrated Cena. They held their championship belts in a final salute.
Rather than giving a speech, Cena left his signature wristbands and shoes in the ring. He walked up the ramp and gave one last salute to the fans.

A New Role as Global Ambassador
Outside of wrestling, Cena built a successful film career, appearing in blockbusters such as Peacemaker, Barbie, and Fast & Furious. He continuously used his mainstream profile to draw attention back to the wrestling brand.
Cena’s commitment to charity also sets him apart. He has granted more than 650 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. No other superstar, in wrestling or elsewhere, has come close to this number.
Cena is not entirely stepping away from the company. He has signed a new five-year contract as WWE’s Global Ambassador.
In this role, he will continue to shape the next generation and travel for the brand, just not between the ropes. He spent two decades encouraging children never to give up. Now, he gives up only the part of himself that required the constant grind and injuries.
