Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has shared a personal health lesson with the public. The unconventional politician revealed he had to undergo a surgical procedure after a painful abscess developed on his finger.
The cause of the infection was traced back to poor nail hygiene.
The MP explained that his lifelong habit of either biting his nails or using a razor blade to cut them led to the painful ordeal. He has now made a firm public pledge to adopt a nail cutter henceforth.

The Source of the Pain
Mr Salasya disclosed the details of the incident on his social media platform. He noted that the finger infection required a surgical operation to treat. This process was extremely painful.
The lawmaker blamed his past nail care habits for the health scare. He specifically cited using a razor blade or resorting to biting his nails, rather than visiting a manicure specialist or using a dedicated tool.

“The people who don't like cutting their nails with a razor blade or going for a manicure, their job is to bite their nails like me, now look, it has led to this surgical operation.”
The Post-Surgery Image
Accompanying his candid admission was a photograph showing the aftermath of the surgery. The image is a close-up selfie of the MP. He is pictured wearing a light-coloured, short-sleeved shirt that has a subtle blue and white patterned print.
The focus of the photo is his right index finger. This finger is heavily bandaged with thick white gauze. The gauze is carefully secured in place with a white medical plaster or tape.

The MP looks directly at the camera with a neutral and somewhat serious expression, confirming the severity of the situation.
A New Pledge to Hygiene
Following the operation, the MP announced a change in his personal routine. He declared that the pain and the removal of the abscess convinced him to change his ways.
He vowed to stop his old habits, confirming that he would immediately purchase a proper nail cutter.
“First, today I'm buying a nail cutter. I've refused to bite my nails, the pain I've felt, and the abscess that has been removed; let's just leave it at that.”
He humorously concluded his statement by referencing his health and his high energy levels. He alluded to his personal status, jokingly noting his role as an asset in a 200 metres race in the ongoing EAC Inter-parliamentary games in Uganda.
