The controversy surrounding the death of renowned Kikuyu gospel singer Betty Bayo has intensified dramatically since she was laid to rest.

Betty Bayo, who passed away on 10 November 2025 after battling leukaemia, was buried during an emotional ceremony at her home in Mugumo Estate, Kiambu County, on 20 November 2025.

In the weeks following the burial, deep family tensions regarding her final days and the custody of her two young children have been laid bare across social media.

Speaking in a viral video, Sky urged social media users to stop harassing her biological father, Pastor Victor Kanyari, and her late mother’s partner, Hiram Gitau (Tash).

She confirmed that she maintains a loving relationship with both men and refused to choose sides, insisting on neutrality in the developing family feud.

“I still love both of my fathers. I don't know what you guys are talking about. I'm not picking sides. I love them both.”

Sky cautioned users against drawing conclusions based on limited knowledge, stressing that they did not know what was happening privately.

The Brothers’ Claims of Ignorance

The public debate escalated on 3 December 2025, when Betty’s brother, Edward Mbugua, revealed previously unknown details about her final days.

During a TikTok Live session, Mbugua claimed that he, his siblings, and their mother were unaware of the severity of Betty’s illness before she passed away.

He explained that Betty would usually inform him of minor health issues, and there was no prior indication of the serious illness that claimed her life.

“I do not know what exactly happened that she fell ill, and I was never informed. I am not aware of anything about her having been seriously ill. At home, nobody knew that Betty was sick or had an underlying condition,” he stated.

He further expressed his view that the children, Sky and Danivictor, should remain with their biological father, Pastor Kanyari, who Mbugua noted had continued to fulfil his fatherly responsibilities despite the separation. The children have been residing with Tash since the burial.

Mother Demands Post-Mortem and Immediate Custody

On 6 December 2025, the controversy deepened when Betty’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, spoke out from the United States, demanding answers.

During a livestream, Wairimu claimed her daughter experienced distress shortly before her death and shared her heartbreaking final words.

“A post-mortem needs to be done because my child cried to me, asking why and who I left her with.”

Wairimu insisted that a post-mortem must be performed to provide clarity for the family. She also declared that her grandchildren must be moved immediately from their current home. She urged the public to communicate this decision to Kanyari.

Kanyari Alleges Separation and Heeds Mother's Counsel

Hours after the mother's public appeal on 7 December 2025, Pastor Victor Kanyari addressed the situation in a TikTok video.

Kanyari, the biological father of the children, alleged that Betty and her partner, Tash (Hiram Gitau), had separated three months before her death.

Kanyari expressed deep sympathy for Betty’s grieving mother, Joyce Wairimu. He urged Tash to heed the mother's counsel, cautioning him to show respect to the elderly woman to avoid receiving a curse.

“Niko na huzuni sana juu ya huyo mama, nimemhurumia na ningeomba Tash kusikiliza tu mawaidha ya huyo mama ili Tash usipate laana ya aliyekufa ama upate laana ya huyo mama akiwa hai. So sikiza tu mawaidha ya huyo mama,” Kanyari stressed.

Regarding the contentious custody situation, Kanyari clarified that while the children are biologically his, he would listen to the grandmother’s wishes concerning their care.

The escalating public feud, driven by conflicting accounts and differing demands for custody, has placed the two young children at the centre of an intense and widespread debate.

The public scrutiny has led many netizens to question why the family is raising such intimate and difficult questions only after the singer was laid to rest.
