Controversial Kenyan blogger Edgar Obare, the figure behind the infamous BNN channel, has turned to his loyal followers for financial support.
He is seeking donations to help fund the filing of an appeal against a major defamation judgment.
This comes a day after a Nairobi court ordered Mr Obare to pay KSh 6 million in damages after he lost a defamation suit.
The Landmark Court Ruling
The case was filed by model Bernice Nunah and co-plaintiff Kelvin Kaume Maingi. The suit related to a post Mr Obare published in 2022.
The judgment was delivered on November 7, 2025, in Civil Case No. E6364 of 2022.
The court awarded the two plaintiffs Ksh 4 million in general damages, split equally between them. They were also awarded Ksh 2 million in exemplary and aggravated damages.

Beyond the monetary fine, the court ordered Mr Obare to issue a full, unconditional apology.

He was also directed to correct and withdraw the specific defamatory publication dated December 22, 2022.
Model Bernice Nunah is a well-known Kenyan runway and commercial model. She was named the second runner-up in the Miss World Kenya pageant for the 2019–2021 cycle.
Mr Obare is a prominent Kenyan digital creator who uses Instagram, the BNN web, and Telegram channels for his reporting. The ruling highlights the substantial legal risks associated with publishing defamatory content online.
The Call for Community Support
Mr Obare’s decision to appeal to his audience for funds was reportedly prompted by a direct message from a fan. The interaction saw a supporter advise him on how to proceed.
The fan suggested Mr Obare set up a system for contributions.
“Edgar, create a paybill we contribute. Nobody can stop reggae”.
Mr Obare responded positively to the suggestion. He thanked the fan, saying, "Oh wow, asante".
The fan then encouraged him to announce the request to his wider following.
“Also announce it to the larger following, because we enjoyed the tea together. I feel like you have real people that love what you do”.

Mr Obare agreed to the plan, replying, "Asante will do so".
The blogger has since publicly shared a request for contributions. He posted a message asking people to send money.
The message read: “Please donate or subscribe to support filing an Appeal.”
The post included a phone number for donations. It also featured a link to join "BNN PREMIUM".
Mpasho reached out to him via Instagram DM and he indeed confired that the case went against him and his intention to appeal the ruling.
He said;
"Hello Mpasho, I plan on addressing the story myself on BNN PREMIUM. To answer your question, yes, we have been in court since 2022, but Bernice Nunah was only the second plaintiff, and never showed up for court. Zubeida Koome's ex-husband Koome Maingi, who is a close friend of President Ruto, was the first plaintiff and the one really suing me for defamation. The court ruled in their favour, but we disagree with the decision and are appealing the case. Regards."
