A significant aesthetic trend has swept through Kenya’s celebrity landscape this year. A wave of prominent figures, long identified by their iconic dreadlocks, have opted for the "big chop."
This shift sees influential musicians, podcasters, and online personalities shedding their signature locks for shorter, often cleaner styles.
The trend has captured massive public attention. For many of these celebrities, their dreadlocks were integral to their brand. Shaving them off signaled a major personal and professional transition.

Simani Leads the January Cuts
The digital community continued the trend into the second half of the year. TikTok sensation, trainer, and social media wellness content creator Shiv Simani also abandoned his distinctive hair in Early January.
Simani, known for his humorous and relatable content, shared his new hairstyle on January 7, 2025, proving the change was less about genre and more about personal rebranding.
Nyashinski
One of the most surprising and publicised changes came from legendary rapper Nyashinski, whose long, thick locks defined his look for over a decade.
He announced his dramatic transformation on February 14, 2025. The musician, whose real name is Nyamari Ongegu, shared a picture on social media with a short, curly high fade.
Online reports suggested the timing was intentional.

“He always planned to do it once he hit 40, a decision he had made years ago; to change his look for his 40s,” a source close to the rapper revealed shortly after the cut went public.

The surprise move immediately trended online, confirming the cultural weight of the dreadlock change in Kenyan celebrity culture.
Podcasters and Content Creators Follow Suit
The movement quickly spread across the digital media scene. Mwafreeka, co-host of the popular Iko Nini Podcast, made his clean-shaven look public in June 2025.
His decision was seen by fans as a marker of a new chapter in his successful career in podcasting.
Similarly, renowned digital creator Raymond Kahuma shed his locks, revealing his new style on May 18, 2025.
Kahuma, known for his culinary adventures, also embraced the fresh look, sparking thousands of reactions from his followers who had only ever known him with dreadlocks.
Coster Ojwang with New Look
On December 1, musician and Kodong Klan member Coster Ojwang surprised his fans with a new month look. He posted a picture of himself with short, dyed hair, a quite different look from his usual dreadlocks.
“New month, new me,” Ojwang captioned the photo.
Generally, people decide to shave their longstanding dreadlocks for a mix of practical, emotional, and spiritual reasons. Often, the decision is tied to a desire for a fresh start or significant life changes.
