President William Ruto recently delivered a straightforward message to young Kenyans. He specifically targeted members of the ‘Gen Z’ demographic who are aged over 25 years.
The President urged these young adults to settle down and commit to marriage.
The location for the President's remarks was a high-profile wedding event. The event took place on Saturday, 29 November 2025. This was the wedding of Moses Mudavadi and Qillian Saiya.
President Ruto’s instruction was concise: "Those of you who are above the age of 25, get married. Get married,” he urged.
He also warned against excessive ‘club-hopping’. The President suggested marriage is a key component of national stability.

Acknowledging Economic Reality
Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County's Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, has now responded to the President’s challenge.
Mosiria agreed that marriage brings blessings. He acknowledged that the President spoke the truth.
However, Mosiria pointed out the difficulty caused by the current economy. He noted that the ‘boy child’ is no longer spending nights in clubs. He stressed this is not by choice.

Mosiria shared observations about changing nightlife. He stated that the number of girls in clubs is increasing rapidly. He contrasted this with the boy child at home, often checking the "token balance".
A Proposal for a ‘Starter Life Kit’
Mr Mosiria believes economic constraints prevent youth from settling down. He put forward a humble suggestion to the government.
“Mr. President, my humble thinking is this: Is there a way the Ministry of Youth can introduce a special “Starter Life Kit” for young people aged 25 and above, just one-year support to help them marry and start life?”
The Nairobi Chief Officer argued this support would not need to be substantial. It would be "just something small". Its purpose would be to help youths move from the “tuko kwa talking stage” to becoming an “established household”.

Stabilising Young People
Mosiria used the KSh 50,000 NYOTA programme as an example. Since that programme is working, he argued, a marriage kit is possible with proper government planning.
He stated that this support could help stabilise young people. It would also encourage responsible living. Furthermore, it would help reduce the "rising nightlife chaos that is worrying all of us".
Mr Mosiria noted that parents would immediately support the message of "vijana tuoe" (young people, let's marry) if they witnessed what happens at modern house parties.
He confirmed that youth are ready to build families and a better nation. They simply need "kitu kidogo kama starter pack ya maisha" (a small starter pack for life).
