The name Jeff Koinange is a household name, especially in the Kenyan media fraternity. Today, we trace the history of this man, who has vast experience.
Jeff Mwaūra Koinange MBS was born on 7 January 1966. Koinange was raised primarily by his mother after his father passed away when Jeff was just two years old.
He is one of the grandsons of Koinange Wa Mbiyu.
Koinange attended St. Mary’s School in Nairobi for his primary and secondary education. He then moved to the United States for further studies.

Between 1987 and 1989, he attended Kingsborough Community College. He graduated with an associate degree in broadcast technology and management.
Koinange later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from New York University.
From Early Newsrooms to the CNN Global Stage
Before his reporting career took off, Koinange started as a flight attendant with Pan American World Airways.
His early journalism work included positions at ABC News (1991–1992) and NBC News (1994). He worked for Reuters Television from 1995 to 2001.
During this time, he covered Africa and served as its chief producer. Koinange gained international recognition at CNN.

He was the Africa correspondent for CNN and CNN International from 2001 to 2007. He covered major humanitarian crises and conflicts across the continent.
These stories included the civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, the crisis in Darfur, and the famine in Niger.

Koinange is the first African to win an Emmy Award. This award was for his coverage of the famine in Niger. He also received the George Foster PEABODY award in 2006 for reporting on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the US.
His time at CNN concluded on 29 May 2007. This followed a controversy over a report on the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in Nigeria. The Nigerian government claimed the report was “staged,” but CNN denied the charge.
The Return Home and JKL
Seven months after leaving CNN, Koinange was hired by the Kenyan TV station K24. He was a news anchor and hosted the Capital Talk Show. He worked at K24 up to 2012. This show later became known as The Bench.
He later joined Arise Television in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he covered pan-African stories, before returning to Kenya to launch Jeff Koinange Live on KTN in 2013.
Since February 2017, he has hosted Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) on Citizen TV. JKL is a popular talk show focusing on political and current affairs. He is also a radio host at HOT 96 in the morning.

Surprisingly, Koinange has been absent from TV and radio since August 2025, with no publicly known details about his whereabouts.
Published Works
Koinange’s career insights are documented in his autobiography. His book, Through My African Eyes, was published in 2014.
The memoir offers a look into his personal life, his school days, and his climb to international journalism.
