Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi, a declared presidential hopeful for the 2027 General Election, has launched an urgent public appeal for funds.

The activist is asking Kenyans to financially contribute to his campaign, stating the donations are crucial for his safety and to sustain his political movement.

Mr Mwangi, a long-time critic of the current administration, is seeking support for his "Mwanzo Mpya" (New Beginning) campaign. He declared his intention to vie for the top seat in August 2027.

Justification for a Full Security Detail

In a statement shared on his X platform, the activist outlined the high cost of running his campaign, attributing a large portion to security expenses.

He justified the need for a full team by citing threats to his well-being.

“I need your urgent help to stay safe and keep campaigning. If Kenya were safe, I would move with just one driver. But because of hired goons, rampant crime, and state-sponsored violence, I am forced to travel with a full security and media team.”

His plea was direct and dramatic, emphasising the gravity of his situation:

"Please contribute to my campaign today — your support literally helps keep me alive while I continue meeting the people".

The activist stressed that every contribution, regardless of size, is significant to the movement.

The Call for Public Funding

The decision to rely on grassroots fundraising is positioned as a challenge to traditional, elite-funded politics. Mr Mwangi acknowledged that not all support must be financial.

He urged his followers to continue backing his efforts.

“I appreciate your support in any way, big or small. Even simply sharing the post and telling your friends and followers about my candidacy is enough.”
