Mourners gathered at CFF Church in Kiambu on Sunday, November 16, for the memorial service of the late Betty Bayo.
Her daughter, Sky Victor, delivered a moving tribute. Sky offered an intimate look into her deep and complex relationship with her mother.
She told the congregation that the day was meant to be one of remembrance, not sadness.
Betty Bayo was a well-known Kenyan gospel singer. She rose to fame with hit songs like “11th Hour.” She was remembered by many for her contributions to the Kenyan music scene.

Cherished Moments and Hard Truths
Sky Victor began by emphasising the beautiful moments they shared. She admitted that their relationship, like any mother-daughter bond, included fights and misunderstandings. These disagreements sometimes made her question her mother’s love.
However, the fights always ended. When they passed, her mother would become the happiest and funniest person around.

Sky described Betty Bayo as a remarkable storyteller. She noted that her mother’s ability to tell a story was one of her best features.
Betty Bayo could make listeners sit for hours. Sky used to share all her dreams and plans with her mother.
“For those who don't know, my mom is some storyteller. One of her best features. She can make you sit and listen forher to her stories for hours. All funny content you see me doing online was all her amazing plan.”
Betty Bayo supported all of her ambitions, even when Sky felt they sounded unrealistic.

The Woman Behind the Camera
Sky Victor revealed that Betty Bayo was her greatest source of encouragement. She recalled that her mother told her never to listen to "haters". Instead, Sky was always encouraged to be confident.
All the funny content that Sky creates online was part of her mother’s plan. Betty Bayo was often the woman standing behind the camera.
She would shout words of encouragement while her daughter performed. Sky confessed it was sad to know she would never experience that support again.
"She used to tell me to never listen to what the haters said and to always be confident,” Sky recalled.
Betty Bayo was also credited with raising her daughter in Christ. Sky remembered joining her mother’s hours-long prayer sessions from the early age of six.
She was curious about what her mother was discussing with God. Sky's genuine love for reading and studying the Bible started here.

The Crushing Weight of Loss
Sky described the moment the news of her mother’s death was broken to her. She did not cry immediately. She initially thought everyone was pranking her.
The devastating reality hit when she saw the sad and worried faces of those around her. Sky became weak and pale. She lost her appetite.
She recalled seeing her mother for the last time in a hospital room. Sky described the scene as her world crashing down. She saw her mother’s body lying lifeless on the bed.

She summed up her mother’s many roles in her life. Betty Bayo was her mom, her best friend, a role model, and her idol. Listing all her mother meant to her would take days.

It is difficult for Sky to accept that she will not make new memories with her favourite person. She ended her tribute with a firm promise to her mother: "I do promise her that I’ll make her proud.".
