Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP), Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has publicly urged comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi not to contest the Lang’ata seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Jalang'o suggested that Omondi should instead consider vying for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat. The MP stated this would be feasible as the incumbent, Babu Owino, is reportedly planning to run for Nairobi Governor.

The plea was made after a recent political survey indicated that Eric Omondi holds significant, albeit secondary, support within the Lang’ata constituency.

The Mizani Africa Poll Results

The catalyst for Jalang’o’s call was a parliamentary comparative analysis survey conducted by Mizani Africa.

The poll aimed to gauge voter preference for the next Lang'ata MP should elections be held today.

The results showed that Jalang'o maintains a strong lead in Lang’ata, enjoying 55.3% support. This demonstrated broad voter confidence in his leadership.

However, the survey also included other potential candidates. Abass Khaliff secured 8.5% support, and Erick Omondi received 5.3%.

The remaining 28.8% of the respondents were classified as undecided.

Omondi’s 5.3% influence, while not a leading figure, suggests a notable base of support in the constituency.

An Offer to Move East

Reacting to the poll, Jalang’o reached out to Eric Omondi with a direct proposal. He advised Omondi against challenging him in Lang’ata.

“When people have confidence in what you do! I thank the people of Lang’ata for trusting me with this job! Siasa kidogo kazi kwa wing!!! @ericomondi nipigie tuongee uniachie hii mbogi yako, enda usimame Embakasi East. Babu anatoka anapanda juu!”

The statement suggests an acceptance of Omondi’s political momentum but a strategic redirection to avoid a head-to-head contest in Lang’ata. Jalang’o appears confident that the Embakasi East seat will soon be vacant.

Eric Omondi’s Political Ambition

Eric Omondi, initially a comedian, has become a prominent social activist in recent years. He has championed various social and political causes.

While Omondi has publicly engaged in political discussions, challenging politicians and addressing national issues, he has not yet confirmed his intention to run for the Lang'ata seat in the 2027 polls.

Jalang’o’s intervention attempts to steer Omondi’s political debut away from his current base. It acknowledges the threat Omondi's popularity could pose, particularly if the undecided segment of voters were to lean his way.

The Battle for Nairobi Seats

The Lang’ata seat has historically been a high-profile political battleground. Jalang’o won the seat in the 2022 General Election on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

A direct contest between two popular celebrities, Jalang'o and Omondi, would undoubtedly become one of Nairobi’s most talked-about 2027 races. Jalang'o's call aims to diffuse this potential celebrity clash early.

The proposal for Omondi to challenge in Embakasi East hints at a wider reshuffling of political forces in the capital. The political environment in Kenya remains fluid, and celebrity influence continues to shape electoral contests.
