Saitabao ole Kanchory, who served as Raila Odinga’s Chief Agent during the 2022 general elections, has publicly called for a public inquest into the death of the former Prime Minister.
Kanchory took to social media to raise his concerns just days after Odinga’s passing.
Questions and Doubts
The former agent stated that the judicial investigation is necessary to address "the questions and doubts emerging concerning the death of Baba Raila Odinga".

A public inquest is a formal judicial investigation into a sudden, unexpected, or unexplained death. Its purpose is to either rule out or establish any possibility of foul play.
Kanchory’s post emphasized that the inquest is crucial and should be conducted in the public interest.

“We need a PUBLIC INQUEST to put to rest the questions and doubts emerging concerning the death of Baba Raila Odinga. A Public inquest is a judicial investigation into any sudden, unexpected, or unexplained death to rule out (or establish) any foul play. Baba's death calls for a public inquest in the public interest,” he tweeted.
The investigation is heard in a magistrate's court and aims to determine the cause and circumstances of the death.
An Investigation into the Cause of Death
In Kenya, magistrates are empowered to hold inquiries into the cause of death in cases involving sudden death or where there is a reasonable suspicion that a person has committed an offense.

Although the verdict of an inquest can suggest murder, its primary aim is to establish the facts and circumstances of the death, not to determine criminal liability. If the inquest suggests an offense, it can lead to subsequent criminal proceedings.
Raila Odinga’s office confirmed he passed away on 15th October 2025 after suffering a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment in India.
The Context of a Strained Relationship
Kanchory’s call for an inquest comes from a figure with a complicated relationship with Odinga’s political camp.
During the tallying of votes in the 2022 presidential election, Kanchory had caused a sensation at the Bomas of Kenya. He alleged that the tallying centre was a "scene of crime," dramatically disrupting the process.

His public statements following the 2022 loss also created controversy. Kanchory later claimed that Odinga's campaign was "disorganised" and that the former Premier had effectively "gave it away".

He repeatedly spoke about the alleged failures and disorganisation within the campaign that he believed led to the defeat.
The demand for a judicial inquiry from Odinga's former chief agent introduces a public query into the circumstances of the former leader's death.
