The recent passing and subsequent burial of opposition leader Raila Odinga dominated national discourse in Kenya.
The death of the democracy defender coincided with the nation's traditional celebration of heroes, known as Mashujaa Day.
Following the solemn weekend, Kenyans are now reflecting deeply on Odinga’s decades of political activism.
Across the country, citizens are urging the government to cement his legacy and maintain the heritage he established in national leadership.

A Place in the Pocket: The Call for an 80 Bob Coin
Among the numerous suggestions for honouring Odinga, one unique proposal has captured attention.
Some Nairobi residents are advocating for the creation of a new currency denomination. They propose introducing an 80 Bob Shilling coin featuring Odinga’s portrait.
This specific proposal aims to ensure that his memory remains visible in daily life, especially during economic transactions.

"What if they introduce an 80 Bob Shilling? Yeah. For Baba. That one will be something good that we will continue seeing him and even as we are doing our economics,” one Gen Z lady told NTV reporter.
The rationale behind this unique currency tribute is rooted in Odinga's perceived fight for Kenya’s economy.

The Defender of Democracy
For many Kenyans, Odinga is regarded as a cornerstone of democracy and reform. His name has dominated the thoughts of many citizens as they reflect on his political struggles over several decades.
In Busia County, residents interviewed celebrated the late leader as a steadfast defender of Kenyan freedom. Those who followed his journey noted his exceptional resilience and endurance.
Odinga’s ability to console his followers, even after massive political setbacks, is frequently recalled. After the contested 2007 elections, for example, many supporters were furious that the election was reportedly stolen.
Odinga intervened to assure them that they would "have a day to live again".
Leaders are being asked to emulate the burden he carried for the nation.
"The best tribute we can give to him is forming men who can stand with the same solidarity, with the same strength that he stood with to speak for a generation."

Broader Tributes Proposed
The suggestion for an 80 Shilling coin is just one of several ways citizens want to permanently memorialise ‘Baba’.
Other proposed tributes include major physical monuments and public holidays. Some citizens have asked the government to erect a statue in his honour, similar to the one established for Jomo Kenyatta.

This suggested statue would be placed prominently in Kisumu. The aim is to ensure that younger generations understand who Raila Amolo Odinga was.
Furthermore, there is a push for a significant piece of national infrastructure to bear his name. Suggestions include naming a major road, perhaps comparable to the Thika Road, as the 'Raila Amolo Odinga Highway'.
Finally, calls have been made for a specific date to be designated a national holiday in his honour. Kenyans would then gather in stadiums on that day to celebrate his unique importance as a patriot.
