This public holiday honors heroes across various sectors, and a recent list of proposed honourees from the National Heroes Council highlights significant figures in Kenya's entertainment, media, and sports industries.

The proposed list celebrates those whose creative works and athletic prowess have defined Kenya’s modern cultural identity.

Several foundational figures in the arts are set to be recognized for their enduring influence.

Prof. Ngugi wa Thiong'o

Kenya's foremost author, is being honoured posthumously. His career, spanning over half a century, elevated Kenyan literature onto the global stage.

His advocacy for indigenous language and cultural sovereignty is especially celebrated.

In music, three key producers and rappers who shaped the modern urban sound are highlighted.

He is honoured as a pioneering producer who laid the groundwork for modern urban Kenyan music, mentoring legends like Kalamashaka and Necessary Noize.

Clement Rapudo Sijenyi (Clemo)

Feted for pioneering the Genge genre through Calif Records. He later founded Ngomma VAS, a digital platform that promotes and distributes Kenyan music globally.

"Paul Julius Nunda (Jua Cali)

He will be honoured as a pioneering Kenyan rapper and co-founder of Calif Records." His hits earned him national fame, and he was named one of the 100 most influential Kenyans by The Standard newspaper in 2007.

Issah Mmari Wangui (E-Sir)

He will be recognised posthumously as a figure who revolutionised urban music with his masterful lyrical blending of Swahili, Sheng, and English.He won multiple accolades, including Best Male Artist at the Kisima Awards 2003.

Fundi Konde

The list also reaches back to honour Fundi Konde posthumously. He is widely credited as East Africa’s first electric guitarist, laying the foundation for Kenya’s recording industry.

In gospel, veteran Kamba musician Faith Nziva Kitheleis recognised for her career spanning over 30 years and for championing the rights of music creators.

Meanwhile, John Okumu (Wuod Fibi) is celebrated for producing modern Ohangla and Rhumba fusion music, elevating Luo music internationally through Barikiwa Studios.

Voices in Media and Culture

The broadcasting sector sees two notable women receiving honours. Elizabeth Awor Obege is a veteran KBC broadcaster whose talent and expertise broke barriers in a highly male-dominated field.

She has entertained,positively impacted Kenyans by addressing societal issues,and mentored a generation of female broadcasters.

Mwanahamisi Hamadi, a seasoned TV anchor, is honoured for championing Kenyan women through her program Mwanamke Bomba on Citizen Television.

This programme spotlights ordinary Kenyan women achieving extraordinary things in areas like entrepreneurship and community leadership.

Sports Development and Football Heroes

Sports journalist Shadrack Andenga Odinga is being recognised for his role in media reporting, commentary, and analysis that helps players gain recognition and recruitment.

In 2024, his coverage helped elevate the profiles of youngsters during the Talanta Hela Championships and Safaricom Chapa Dimba, resulting in some being drafted into the national Harambee Stars team.

Football administration leader Nicholas Chumba Musonye is honoured for his contribution to soccer development in East and Central Africa.

He is noted for organizing tournaments that promoted talent and is currently guiding Kenya's preparations to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).

Finally, four recent Harambee Stars players are celebrated for their contributions to the 2024 CHAN Championship run:

Wesley Ogam Rabok scored two crucial goals and was the top scorer for the Harambee Stars during the 2024 CHAN.

Omar Aboud served as captain during the 2024 CHAN, leading the team to the quarter-finals.

Bryne Omondi earned the Man of the Match award due to his outstanding goal-keeping displays.

Alpha Onyango received the Man of the Match award twice for his influential midfield performances.

In total, the National Heroes Council proposed 180 names of Kenyans set for major honours by President William Ruto after the commemoration of this year’s Mashujaa Day at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
