Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have finally issued an official statement following the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The tribute came after several days of intense pressure from Kenyans on social media, many of whom publicly questioned the US leader's silence following Odinga's death on Wednesday, 15th October 2025.

The Obamas' tribute, posted on their official social media page, described Odinga as a "true champion of democracy".

A Champion of Democracy

The Obamas’ statement praised Odinga’s lifelong dedication to the country.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya.”

The statement also highlighted Odinga’s willingness to prioritise national interests.

"Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions," Obama wrote.

He praised Odinga for consistently choosing a path of "peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values".

The Photo: A Formal Snapshot

The tribute was accompanied by a photograph featuring both the former President and First Lady with Raila Odinga and his wife, Ida Odinga. The picture appears to be taken at a formal event, likely a reception, with all four individuals dressed in smart attire.

In the image, Raila Odinga stands on Michelle Obama's right, wearing a dark suit, a light shirt, and a tie. Ida Odinga is on the far left, also elegantly dressed.

Odinga’s Final Journey

Odinga’s body is currently in Kenya after being flown back from India, where he died. Kenya Airways increased and upgraded flights to Kisumu to handle the high travel demand from mourners heading to the funeral.

Public viewing events are being held before the burial at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County, scheduled for Sunday, 19th October 2025.
