Kenya is deep in mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The nation is preparing for a state burial set to take place tomorrow.
Today, thousands of citizens are gathered at Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu for the public viewing of the body.
The widespread sense of grief has crossed borders. Regional leaders, citizens, and artists are offering their condolences.

Shusho’s Heartfelt Dedication
Joining the tributes is renowned Tanzanian gospel singer Christina Shusho. Shusho has released a touching song titled ‘Pumzika’ (Rest) in honor of Mr Odinga.
The singer announced the release on her social media channels. She dedicated the song to the late leader, whom she affectionately referred to as "baba".
The official video for ‘Pumzika’ is currently available for viewing on YouTube.
“The official video is now available on YouTube. My dedication to Baba,” Shusho said.

A True Statesman
Shusho clearly holds the former Kenyan leader in high regard. In her dedication, she praised his lifetime of service.

“Together we stand as one people to honor a selfless leader. A true statesman, Raila Amollo Odinga.”
Shusho emphasised that the song is her specific dedication to "baba". This tribute highlights the immense stature Mr Odinga held across East Africa.
The Mood of 'Pumzika'
The song 'Pumzika’ delivers a deeply mournful yet spiritually accepting mood. Shusho’s vocals convey a sense of gentle finality, acknowledging the pain of loss but finding comfort in faith.

The lyrics are written in Swahili. They speak directly to the deceased, offering farewell wishes. The message centres on acceptance that the ultimate decision regarding life and death rests with the divine.
Key Lyrics Translate Acceptance
The central verses express a common theme in mourning—that while loved ones on Earth cherished the person, God’s love proved greater. The Swahili verses are simple but profoundly moving.
“Umelala wee baba umelala wee nenda wee Raila nenda wee. Tunakupenda Mungu kakupenda zaidi baba. Nenda wee baba nenda wee nenda wee nenda wee mwana,” she sings in part.

These lyrics translate, in essence: “You have slept, father, you have slept, go, Raila, go. We loved you, but God loved you more, Father. Go, father, go, go, go, son.”

The repetition of ‘nenda we’ (go) serves as a final, heartbreaking send-off. The song is designed to provide comfort and a sense of dignified rest during this difficult time for the Kenyan people.
Shusho’s tribute song comes hours after fellow Tanzanian artist from the secular sector, Alikiba, jetted to Kenya to join his Kenyan fans in mourning the fallen premier.
Alikiba, in his interview with entertainment journalists, revealed a deep bond with Odinga, asserting that on Sunday, after the burial, he will dedicate his concert to Odinga.
