During the solemn State Burial Mass for his brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a moment of unexpected candour broke the formality.
Dr Oburu Oginga, speaking before dignitaries and mourners at Nyayo Stadium, introduced two women as his wives.
His announcement drew attention during the emotional proceedings. He chose to present both partners publicly. He stated clearly that he was attending the event with "my wives".

The General and His Household
Dr Oginga began by referring to himself using a military metaphor. "I am a general," he declared. He confirmed that he possessed "two of them".
“If I don't introduce them to you, they might feel jealous and refuse to give me food.”
He offered a light-hearted yet firm reason for the necessity of this public introduction. He explained the potential consequences if he failed to acknowledge them.

He offered a personal reflection on their shared history. He described her as "the lady who took me out of boyhood".

The Need for a Helper
The elder wife's introduction was followed by the explanation for the second marriage. Dr Oginga explained the addition of the second wife was due to his advancing years. He sought assistance in his older age.
He explained that he wished to ease the physical burden on his first wife. He shared the intimate reasons behind seeking a second partner. He specified that he did not want his elder wife to perform strenuous acts.
“But I thought that now atmy age I don't want her to scratch me. I don't want her to to massage me. So I brought her helper.”

He described his newer spouse as an assistant to his first wife. The statement provided an unexpected glimpse into the personal life of the prominent political family during the national mourning period.
