The nation is in mourning following the death of veteran Kenyan politician and former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga. Mr Odinga passed away on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, at the age of 80.
The news was confirmed by sources close to his office, leading to an immediate outpouring of grief across the country, especially on social media.
Known as a towering figure in Kenyan politics, Mr Odinga's passing leaves a significant void. His legacy is defined by decades of democracy activism and five attempts at the presidency.
An Emotional Day for Creatives
Celebrities took to their official Instagram pages almost immediately. They posted pictures of the former Prime Minister and shared their grief with millions of followers. Their messages universally celebrated his five-decade-long political career.
Singer Nadia Mukami highlighted the statesman’s far-reaching influence.
“A dark Wednesday for Kenya and the whole of Africa. But as they say, True legends never die, they live on through their legacy. Rest in peace a true statesman, a freedom fighter & voice of the people!”

Fellow entertainer and comedian Blessed Njugush echoed the national sadness. He offered condolences to the Odinga family and friends.
“R.I.P Baba. Condolences to the family and friends. Such a dark day damn it. He fought a good fight !!!! Rest in Peace.”
Comedian Jessy The MC paid tribute to Mr Odinga’s enduring public image, referring to him by one of his popular nicknames.
“It is Well Baba… Rest Well Enigma. My Heartfelt Condolences to the Family of Rt Hon Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. Keep shining on your way Baba.”
Comedian Eric Omondi shared a short video clip showing him embracing the late politician during his brother Fred Omondi’s burial. His caption was a simple acknowledgment of the veteran's status. “Rest Well Baba. RIP Legend,” he wrote.

A Warrior’s Conviction
Musician Prince Indah chose to honour the former Prime Minister by quoting him directly. He posted a photo of Mr Odinga with his arms outstretched, recalling a famous metaphor.
“’I am ready for Africa, and I believe in the story of the African lion. The lion is an African animal; it is the king of the jungle.’ ~ Raila Amollo Odinga... FARE THEE WELL BABA.”
Satirist and content creator Eddie Butita provided a profound reflection on Mr Odinga’s political life. He noted that the veteran's career was a lesson in persistence.
“Kenya has lost one of its most enduring sons. Formerprime minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s life was a story of courage, conviction, and an unbreakable belief that this country could always be better… You never win the race but you win the struggle.”

Gospel singer Bahati and veteran comedian Mwalimu Churchill also posted heartfelt images. Bahati shared a video of a handshake, while Churchill posted a black and white portrait simply captioned: “BABA!!”
Mr Odinga's death occurred around 9:52 AM Indian Time. His body is currently being held at a hospital in Koothattukulam as procedures for its return to Kenya are arranged.
The former Prime Minister died after suffering a cardiac arrest. He collapsed during a morning walk within the premises of the Ayurvedic facility.
A Legacy of Persistence
Mr Odinga served as the Prime Minister of Kenya between 2008 and 2013. His career included five unsuccessful bids for the presidency, in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022.

His political life was full of defining moments. The post-election violence that followed his disputed 2007 presidential bid, for instance, led to the deaths of over 1,300 people.
Despite the controversies, many remember him as a steadfast advocate for democracy and justice.
