Kenyan R&B and pop sensation Nikita Kering has offered aspiring artists a valuable look into the music industry.

During a candid Instagram Q&A session, the award-winning singer shared raw advice on starting a career, the patience required for success, and how to approach collaborations.

The Path to a Music Career

When asked by a fan how one should start their music journey, Kering stressed the importance of immediate action. She warned against delaying one's ambitions.

The singer's advice was simple and direct: "Just post yourself... don’t wait for anything."

Kering’s own career began at a remarkably young age. She started singing when she was only three years old.She began her professional music career at the age of sixteen in 2018 when she released her debut single, "Happy with You".

She told the fan that success began when she stopped waiting for the perfect moment.

"I never had one [an awakening moment] ... I just did what I did and it started working,” she added.

Patience and Fearlessness

Kering emphasised that perseverance is essential for any long-term music career. When asked for advice on pursuing music as a career or passion, she offered a dose of realism.

She highlighted that the journey to success is not instant for most artis`ts.

"It could take 1 year [or 20 years. Don’t feel entitled to success, be patient and keep working."

Reflecting on her earliest days in the industry, Kering described her mindset as a young performer. When a fan inquired about her demeanour when she first began, she used one powerful word.

Collaborations Are Not for Sale

The acclaimed singer also addressed a practical question from a fan about collaborations. A fan asked how much it would cost to feature her on a song.

The question included the acknowledgment that the cost would be "a good amount”. Kering surprisingly stated that her fee is not the main deciding factor right now.

"I wouldn’t charge ? that’s a weird concept to me. I’d do it if I really want to."

She suggested her payment position may change in the future.

"Ask again in 5 years. Maybe I’ll have a different Opinion."

Kering’s transparency provides key insights into the work ethic and passion that have driven her decorated career. She is a multiple All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) winner, having received awards in both the 2019 and 2021 ceremonies.
