Former prison warden Jackson Kihara, widely known as Cop Shakur, has shared a painful story of personal struggle.

He recently opened up online about experiencing loss, significant debt, and depression. In an emotional social media post, the 42-year-old father said he has reached his “lowest moment”.

From Activism to Adversity

Shakur gained public attention earlier in his career. He was admired for using his platform to speak out on police mental health and working conditions. His troubles with the service began in June 2024.

He joined Kenyans in anti-finance bill protests. Shakur was subsequently interdicted and then laid off from service. He maintains that he lost his job illegally because of his activism.

However, the former officer is adamant that his current financial crisis is not due to losing his government job. He states he had planned well following his dismissal. He notes that things became worse because of the businesses he invested in.

“I’m at my lowest moment. I’ve lost everything. I’m in debt, I’ve been auctioned, I have an arrest warrant against me, and I can’t pay my bills or provide for my daughter. I’ve tried to stay strong, but life has been heavy.”

Business Misfortunes Trigger Financial Ruin

Shakur ventured into business, operating a car-hire company after leaving his role as a prison warder. A series of business misfortunes pushed him deep into debt. His outstanding debt now exceeds Sh1 million.

His car-hire venture suffered severe losses. This happened after multiple vehicles were damaged in accidents. Shakur also tried to stay afloat by organising events.

Last December, he organised an outdoor event which was a financial failure. Heavy rain fell on the day of the event, impacting attendance.

“What I’m going through now has nothing to do with losing that job. Things got worse later because of the businesses I invested in.”

Facing Arrest and Personal Trauma

Unable to meet his obligations, Shakur now faces dire consequences. Auctioneers collected the little he had. He shared that he has an active arrest warrant against him. He stated he cannot pay his bills or provide for his daughter.

Beyond the financial crisis, Shakur has battled severe mental health challenges. He revealed that his mental health struggles began after his marriage suffered a major setback.

“My mental health struggles started after my ex-wife cheated on me with my best friend on my own bed. I found them. That moment broke me completely. But I don’t blame her, because I wasn’t there for her. I take responsibility for my part in how things fell apart.

A Public Appeal for a Fresh Start

Shakur says he is determined to keep fighting for a fresh start. He stated that he does not blame anyone for his current circumstances. He is focused on rebuilding his life for himself and his young family.
